New member Steph Baker supplies wedding music across Yorkshire. This week we hand the blog over to her as she shares her highlights of the last few months.
“Hi there! I thought I’d start by giving you an insider to my usual events which crop up in autumn & winter. I’m a solo acoustic act (guitarist/vocalist) who works professionally living just outside York. I play gigs all over Yorkshire (these include regular gigs, private parties and weddings) covering Knaresborough, Ripon, Harrogate, Skipton, York, Wetherby, Pontefract, Wakefield and Huddersfield. For private events and weddings please enquire as I’m happy to travel further afield.
One of the events I booked was a local private housewarming party in September. Some of the work I get is very last minute, so I learn how to fit things into my schedule. I ended up doing a couple of gigs that night! It was so lovely to play for close friends for this do, and something so local. I played a few requests on the evening and got everyone dancing.
In October I was approached to perform at The Pax Inn in Thorpe Arch to do their Halloween Party early doors, such a wonderful local pub I love performing at. I chose some special Halloween-themed songs to perform which went down well on the night, I then followed on to The Fleece in Otley for a later Halloween-themed gig there – such a great atmosphere!
I always end up doing Christmas events early in November – one of them was the Christmas Fair at Priory Cottages put together by the Ladies Links and Melanie Malcolm. They showcased a variety of local stallholders selling bespoke Christmas gifts from jewelry to art to cards and home interior. I provided background solo acoustic Christmas music for the fair and promoted myself at the event, I like to get involved with local events like this as it’s great for getting myself known in the area.
November brought about an unusual wedding performance in York at Barmbyfield Barns, a gorgeous converted barn perfect for weddings/private events set just outside York. I was approached by the bride’s sister to surprise the bride on the day with some solo acoustic singing/guitar. I loved this idea and have not yet done anything this secretive before! We also arranged an extra surprise, serenading the bride (unamplified) as she walked with her bridesmaids towards the ceremony. I arranged with the sister of the bride the songs she wanted to hear and organized a bespoke set list for the ceremony, I love this aspect of doing weddings, learning songs you never normally would have come across. I really enjoyed this extra twist, it made the day extra special for all involved.
Something Old and Something New
I finished the year with a wonderful Housewarming/Birthday/NYE Party for a lovely couple who have recently moved to Harrogate. I arranged a meeting with the couple to see what they wanted for the evening and organized a bespoke set list for the night, this including some upbeat older songs and more modern tunes for the younger ones! What I really enjoy about doing private parties is getting to know a whole new group of people and listening to their amazing stories, such a highlight of my job!”
